SANTA MONICA >> As the clock struck 6:20 a. m. down on Ocean Avenue, the Southern California fog still hung to the finish line of the 2016 Los Angeles Marathon like a bib number to a shirt. The fog shrouded the deserted street like a scene from a Hollywood thriller. One could count the number of people in sight on a single hand and hear the rush of the ocean and occasional crackle of a walkie-talkie with an inaudible instruction. Two workers worked quickly to cut free boxes of this year’s marathon medals, their box cutters drowning out their small talk. Twenty-six miles away — pardon, 26. 2 miles away – stood more than 24,000 participants at Dodger Stadium ready to push, claw and fight to the finish. Three hours later that same calm and deserted finish line became a chaotic swirl of exhaustion, joy and relief as thousands of everyday runners — the single parent, the veteran, the grandparent, the teacher or student — completed their goal. Weldon Kirui of Kenya and Ukraine’s Nataliya Lehonkova may have come in first place, but they were far from the only winners. Act of Love Award When David Bell signed up to run the L. A. Marathon this year he did not know it fell on the 14th, Valentine’s Day, and his girlfriend Marilyn’s birthday. “I got a lot of crap for it,” said Bell with a laugh. So Bell dedicated the run to his girlfriend as an “act of love. “It ended up being that way,” said Bell, who wore a white shirt telling onlookers he was running 26. 2 miles for his girlfriend’s birthday and Valentines. Bell did not run alone, persuading his sister Mandy to fly out to California to run along side him for their first marathon together and first overall. The siblings sprinted the last stretch to the finish line, carrying a Maryland state flag, their home state. “It was painful,” said Bell with a smile. Age is Just a Number Award The announcers at the finish line made a special shout out to Laszlo Buliczka when he crossed, as the septuagenarian had just completed his 26th marathon. Buliczka, 74, hails from Budapest and has been competing in marathons since 1990. The California resident of 30 years works as a cabinet maker, standing 10 hours a day, which he says contributes to his fitness. And there is no question that Buliczka. Source: www.dailynews.com
Matt Costello has spent this season bemoaning his celebrations after each game, suggesting he needs to stop the crazy celebrations that draw attention and have his teammates giving him a hard time. That was not the case Sunday after MSU beat Indiana, a game in which Costello hit his second 3-pointer of the week. Afterward, he ran back down the court, blowing on his fingers and then doing a little dance of sorts with his hands in the air. “I’ve been doing that when Bryn (Forbes) was making threes and now I was finally able to do it for myself," he said. "Russell Westbrook does it where he blows on fingers and then like (holsters) pistols. Source: 247sports.com
