How Jamaica Fell for the Desert Boot: The Story of Reggae's Love Affair With ... - Vogue.com

There’s a lot more history, geography, and, well, swagger, pieced into the simple design of a Clarks Desert Boot than first greets the eye. Its trademark stitchdown profile, in fact, traces a veritable timeline of modern cool, snaking from the South African veldt, through the souks of Cairo, and touching Kashmir, London, and Chicago before ultimately finding its chosen home in the streets of downtown Kingston, Jamaica. To make a centuries-long story short, Nathan Clark, great-grandson of company founder James Clark, based his design on the footwear of British soldiers stationed in Lahore en route to fight the Japanese in Burma circa 1941: breathable but rugged safari boots requisitioned in Cairo’s Khan el-Khalili bazaar for Britain’s Eighth Army during the North African campaign of World War II. That Anglo-Egyptian design was itself a particularly elegant take on a unique Dutch–South African hybrid called the vellie (short for veldskoen , literally “field shoe”), common in the region since the 1700s at least. In spite of that durable pedigree, however, Clark was told the design would “never sell,” and the initial response in the U. K. seemed to confirm that diagnosis. Desert Boots did not take off, in fact, until they found a stateside market via Chicago’s Shoe Fair in 1949. That whiff of American cool, perhaps combined with the minimalism of its form-follows-function design, is what made Desert Boots de rigueur footwear for the mods who rewrote the stylebook of Britain’s postwar boom. Steve McQueen burnished the badman credentials of desert boots even further with his choice of mod footwear on- and offscreen—although to this day, controversy rages among McQueen obsessives as to whether the brown suede vellies glimpsed in his iconic 1968 action film Bullitt were British- or Italian-made. By that time, the Desert Boot’s particular cocktail of dapper British gentility and commando roughness—not to mention its practicality in an urban, tropical milieu—had made Clarks irresistible to the rudeboys of Kingston’s burgeoning concrete jungle. The West Indies was such a key secondary market for Clarks, in fact, that at one point the Desert Boot was redesigned with a longer, narrow toe specifically to cater to the Caribbean sense of style (possibly an echo of the Jamaican predilection for pointy-toed “roach-killer” cowboy boots). Overanalyzing the final 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' trailer - Hypable

As Batman takes a turn in his batmobile, he slides into Superman, who doesn’t move an inch as we hear the batmobile crunch against Superman and slide to a stop. Batman is seen being surprised by Superman, or possibly that he’s just bounced off the alien he thinks is threatening Earth. This early shot seems to show that Superman doesn’t fear Batman in the least (at first), as he rips the doors off of the batmobile. Despite Batman standing up to Superman, without his mechanical armor, it doesn’t seem like Superman realizes what lengths Batman will go to defend Earth from what he sees as a threat. Batman gets his armor on, but will it have kryptonite in it. . At the very end of Man of Steel we saw Lois Lane introduce Clark Kent to “the planet,” and it was unclear if the story would continue with her willing to continue a relationship with Superman. But, in the new trailer we see Clark jumping into a bathtub with Lois, which clearly shows they’re continuing their relationship. As we’ve seen in the past with Batman, the people around him often suffer the most, and we’re curious if Lois will become a target. There are scenes with Lois and Lex Luthor, so it seems likely that Superman will have to save her at some point. In this scene we see Batman firing a large round at Superman, and in an epic slow-mo shot we see Superman grabbing the bullet as it heads towards his face. It’s unclear if this is a lethal gun, or something Batman is using to weaken Superman so that he can fight him, but it’s still unclear if Batman will be willing to kill. The shot takes place on the roof, where we’ve seen the two battling before in previous trailers, so it’ll be interesting to see how this scene unfolds. It is pretty amazing to see Superman catching a bullet shot at him from Batman though, as it seems these two are really going to go at it in the movie. Batman has all kinds of tricks, including spiked boots. Batman’s suit seems to have loads of surprises in it, and it’s interesting that this shot takes such care in showing the spikes on the bottom of his boots. Could this just be a practical element needed for him to scale buildings. We’ve seen him hanging off the side of a building before, so it might just be an accident that the spikes are focused on in the. Source: www.hypable.com

Architectural secrets behind College of the Desert design - The Desert Sun

The desert was a workplace for many renowned Modernist architects. They knew each other well, but seldom collaborated on buildings — with one notable exception. Desert dwellers John Porter Clark, Albert Frey, Donald Wexler and E. Stewart Williams joined San Francisco's John Carl Warnecke in 1958 to design a campus for College of the Desert. Lance O'Donnell, AIA, grew up around the buildings' thin columns and flat rooflines because his father worked on campus. He worked closely with Wexler and Williams as an architect in his own right. Now, he owns Palm Springs firm o2 Architecture and leads Modernism Week tours of the COD campus. This interview with O'Donnell has been edited for brevity and clarity. Do you know how this collaboration came about. He was kind of the who’s who of architects at this time. His specialty was doing what kind of master architects do best, which is, they’re great with clients, they’re really good at distilling big ideas down into overall vision, but they’re not so great at the day-to-day details. Since his office was in San Francisco, he found a partnership with all the local architects. Don (Wexler) talked fondly about it, Stu (Williams) did as well. What architectural elements define the campus. Being trained as (Warnecke) was at Harvard, he was a Modernist, but with College of the Desert he was able to have a vision of Modernism, adapted with a regional overtones, as well as pulling from international traditions. So the campus has some gentle arches. It has some concrete panels that have almost relief in them, these little shadow elements, you can see where it was influenced by architecture from the Middle East. It was also influenced by something he was very much attracted to, which were the date palms… the columns, with the taper, were just an extrapolation of the palm tree shape. What kind of stories did the architects share about the design process. The one that Don (Wexler) tells, he says, it was the day that the trustees were all getting together for the final unveiling of the library, which is the crown jewel of the campus. All the local architects were quite dismayed at the quality of the poured concrete, and they all thought, 'Warnecke's not going to be happy — he hasn’t seen the campus completed and he’s showing up the same day all the.
